What is hard water?

What is hard water?

Have you ever travelled to, or do you currently live in, a place where it is advised not to drink the tap water & most people tend to avoid brushing their teeth with it? Have you ever thought about what that water is doing to the more delicate skin on our face when we wash it with that same water?

…Well I have

Recently I have done a bit of travelling, as have some of my girlfriends. Upon chatting with each other, we all noted that our skin really started playing up while we were away. We all together posed the same question “Was it the water causing our skin concerns?”

So let’s delve into this, can hard water negatively impact your skin? And if so, how do we protect our skin?

Hard water can have several effects on the skin due to its high mineral content, primarily calcium and magnesium ions:

Dryness and Irritation

Hard water can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. This is because the minerals in hard water react with the fatty acids in the skin's natural oils, disrupting the skin's barrier function and causing moisture loss.

Residue

Soap and cleansers may not lather well in hard water, leaving behind a residue on the skin. This residue can clog pores and contribute to acne or exacerbate existing skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.

Sensitivity

The abrasive nature of hard water can irritate sensitive skin, leading to redness, itching, and inflammation. If you are prone to rosacea or sensitive skin, you may find that hard water really exacerbates your symptoms.

Dullness

Hard water can leave a film on the skin, making it appear dull and lackluster. This residue can also prevent skincare products from being absorbed effectively, reducing their efficacy.

Eczema and Dermatitis

Some studies actually suggest a link between hard water and an increased risk of eczema and dermatitis. The minerals in hard water can disrupt the skin's barrier function, making it more susceptible to irritation and inflammation.

Overall, hard water can compromise the skin's natural balance and protective barrier, leading to many skin issues.

…So how do we protect against this kind of damage?

The best way to come at this is to take a comprehensive inside-out approach. By combining the Perfect Skin Kit with the Brightening Clay Mask we can really purify our skin and give it the best protection against the effects of hard water.
