Why the Mouth Area Stays Darker (Perioral Hyperpigmentation)

Ever noticed that you tend to develop more darkness or discoloration around the mouth area?

Well, this is called perioral hyperpigmentation, and it is very common.

It can happen for a few different reasons — usually a mix of inflammation, friction, and pigmentation triggers.

Interestingly, the skin in that area is thinner, drier, and has fewer oil glands compared to other parts of our face, like the cheeks or forehead.

Because of this, it:

  • Loses moisture faster, which weakens the barrier and makes it more vulnerable to irritation and micro-inflammation.
  • Shows pigment changes more visibly, since thin skin allows underlying pigment or redness to be more apparent.
  • Heals more slowly, so any inflammation (like a pimple, rash, or chapping) is more likely to leave behind lingering marks.
  • Has more movement and friction, from speaking, eating, and expression — which can disrupt healing and keep mild inflammation active.

So yes, this delicate skin is far more reactive.

It’s one of the reasons pigmentation around the mouth is often the most stubborn and needs extra barrier repair and calming ingredients to help fade it, rather than strong exfoliation.

This is why utilising an inside out approach can be one of the most effective ways to address this.

We are not risking further damage to the delicate skin — rather we are nourishing and strengthening it, helping it become more resilient over time.

The Hyperpigmentation Cleanse capsules have been a powerful tool for so many.
