Can it get darker first??

Can it get darker first??

So we know that purging is an experience that can sometimes occur when we add new products to our skincare routine due to the fact that they can speed up our cell turnover and push out existing congestion within the skin faster. But what if we are on a journey to fade dark spots, melasma, hyperpigmentation or old acne scars? Will they also get worse before they get better?

Let’s discuss…

This is actually a rare thing that a few people may experience in the first few days.

But it can happen, and I can understand why it would be ever so frustrating to see.

Similar to the acne/purging situation, as the ingredients begin speeding up cell turnover and boosting melanin dispersion, the deeper pigment that was sitting below the surface may become more visible before it begins to fade. Think of it as the pigmentation being “brought up and out” as part of the skin renewal process. This is usually short-lived, and it is a sign that the actives are doing their job in pushing out old, uneven pigment.

As frustrating as this can be to see, if it happens, it doesn’t last long, and typically improves within a week or two as the skin evens out.

You can expect to start noticing results around the 30–45 day mark as your skin gradually becomes more even-toned and radiant. Just stay consistent, and your results will come.

So… which ingredients are helping the most with this cell turnover and melanin dispersion?

Vitamin A (as Beta Carotene) — Supports healthy skin renewal by encouraging faster turnover of old, pigmented skin cells, revealing fresher, more even-toned skin underneath.

🍊 Vitamin C (from Ascorbic Acid & Amla Fruit) — A powerful antioxidant that helps reduce excess melanin production and brightens dark spots by encouraging a more even distribution of pigment.

🌿 Licorice Root Extract — Well-known for inhibiting tyrosinase (the enzyme that triggers melanin production) and gently lightening hyperpigmented areas over time.

🌱 Polypodium Leucotomos Leaf Extract — Helps protect skin from UV damage (which worsens pigmentation) and regulates how pigment is formed and dispersed.

🫖 White Tea Leaf Extract (EGCG) — Rich in antioxidants that protect skin cells and help improve tone by reducing oxidative stress that can trigger uneven pigmentation.

Together, these ingredients gently push out old, uneven pigment and support brighter, clearer skin with consistent use.
