Sagging skin from the sun?

Sagging skin from the sun?

With so many of us enjoying the warm weather of summer, I wanted to check in and remind you of the importance of proper sun protection during these months.

So we know that sun burns are bad for the fact that they can not only cause super serious things like potential skin cancers, but also they can leave us with some very stubborn and long lasting hyperpigmentation. But for those of us concerned with the visible signs of aging, excessing UV damage can actually have a heavy impact on how youthful our skin looks!

Sadly, the sun speeds up skin aging.

So when our skin is exposed to UV rays (in particular UVA), it actually damages the collagen and elastin. These are the proteins that keep our skin firm, bouncy, and lifted. Over time, this damage weakens the support structure in your skin. This can sadly lead to sagging. In particular, this occurs around delicate areas like the cheeks, jawline, and under the eyes.

Here’s the science in simple terms:

Collagen = firmness

Elastin = stretch and bounce

Sun exposure breaks both of these down faster than your body can rebuild them. Because the face is constantly exposed, it's often the first place sagging shows up.

So, how do we manage this while also enjoying the warmer months?

Step 1

SPF daily & reapply!

Step 2

Wear sun protection like a wide brim hat & avoid direct sun exposure on your face.

Step 3

The right vitamins to support the skin from within!

There are 3 categories I recommend addressing. Antioxidants, Collagen support & UV specific support.

1️⃣ Antioxidants

These help to fight sun damage & prevent collagen breakdown

  • Vitamin C: Potent antioxidant that helps protect skin cells from UV damage and is essential for collagen production.
  • Vitamin E: Protects cell membranes and helps reduce UV-induced damage.
  • Grapeseed Extract: High in proanthocyanidins, which preserve collagen and elastin from breakdown.
  • Pomegranate Extract & White Tea Extract: Rich in polyphenols that neutralize free radicals and reduce inflammation from sun exposure.
  • Amla Fruit: High in natural vitamin C + antioxidants, which helps protect skin from oxidative stress.
  • Knottweed Extract: An antioxidant that helps slow visible signs of UV aging.
  • Wolfberry: Supports skin regeneration and has antioxidant effects.

2️⃣ Collagen Support

These are compounds that help with firming & rebuilding structure

  • Lustriva®: Clinically proven to improve skin firmness, elasticity, and thickness.
  • Hydrolyzed Collagen: Provides amino acids the body uses to rebuild skin structure.
  • Vitamin A: Supports skin cell turnover and collagen renewal.
  • Zinc: Helps with skin repair and supports collagen synthesis.
  • Biotin: Supports healthy skin structure, particularly helpful when paired with collagen.

3️⃣ UV-Specific Skin Protection

These are interesting natural botanicals that help shield the skin from the inside out

  • Polypodium Leucotomos Leaf: This little fern has been shown to help protect the skin from UV damage from the inside out.
  • CoQ10: Helps restore cellular energy and reduce oxidative damage from the sun.
