Female hormones & the skin

Female hormones & the skin

Our female hormones, as beautiful as they can be, can wreak some serious havoc on our skin! And if we aren’t aware of what the root cause is, sometimes those pesky skin concerns that pop up in monthly intervals can be rather quite bothersome!

Estrogen, progesterone, and androgens all play a major role in our skin health.

Here are the most common ways that they can negatively impact our skin:

Firstly, acne & breakouts

Fluctuating androgens (like testosterone) increase oil production, which can clog our pores and trigger breakouts, especially around the jawline and chin.

Next up, pigmentation

Estrogen can increase melanin production, adding to and exacerbating melasma and dark spots. This tends to happen especially during pregnancy or while on birth control.

Then onto dryness & sensitivity

A drop in estrogen (e.g., pre-period or during menopause) can reduce our skin's hydration and barrier strength. This can make our skin feel dry, thin, or more reactive.

Ugh, even aging!

Estrogen supports collagen production, so lower levels (like after 35 or during menopause) can lead to fine lines, sagging, and loss of elasticity.

Finally, inflammation & redness

Hormonal imbalances can increase inflammation, triggering flare-ups in conditions like rosacea or eczema.

Now, not to worry, there are ways we can support our skin through these different issues via natural herbs, vitamins & botanics, which means we can help to ease & even prevent these pesky things cropping up on our complexions!

Here are the 3 best ingredients for each of the concerns!

Acne & Breakouts

  • Zinc – This regulates oil production and reduces inflammation, helping to prevent clogged pores and calm breakouts.
  • White Willow Bark Extract – This is a natural source of salicin (similar to salicylic acid), which helps exfoliate inside pores and prevent blackheads/whiteheads.
  • Licorice Root Extract – Our fav anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial ingredient is great for soothing angry, hormonal breakouts and calming skin.

Pigmentation

  • Polypodium Leucotomos – This little fern-like plant protects skin from UV-induced pigmentation and reduces melanin overproduction from hormonal changes.
  • Vitamin C – A forever favorite for all things glowing skin & health, it brightens and fades existing pigmentation while protecting against new dark spots.
  • Dragon’s Blood Powder – A powerful skin healer and antioxidant that helps repair pigmentation damage and strengthen the skin barrier.

Dryness & Sensitivity

  • Hyaluronic Acid – When we supplement with it, it hydrates and plumps the skin on the deepest possible level. This is especially helpful during estrogen drops that cause dryness.
  • Probiotics – These support the gut-skin axis and improve skin resilience, reducing sensitivity and inflammation.
  • Grapeseed Extract – This extract is ever so antioxidant-rich and calming. It helps strengthen the skin’s barrier and fight environmental stressors.

Aging

  • Lustriva® – There is a reason I am obsessed with this. It has been clinically shown to improve skin elasticity, hair growth, and support collagen production.
  • Hydrolyzed Collagen & Keratin – These two provide the amino acids needed to strengthen skin structure and reduce signs of aging.
  • Coenzyme Q10 – This is a potent antioxidant that protects collagen from breakdown and boosts energy production in skin cells for a firmer appearance.

Redness, Inflammation, & Flare-ups

  • Maca Root Powder – This supports hormonal balance and helps reduce inflammatory responses that trigger redness or flushing. It’s rather foul tasting, so it's perfect in supplement form to get max results.
  • Echinacea – We usually think of this for when we are sick, but it is also known for calming inflammation and improving the skin's immune defence.
  • Pomegranate Extract – This tasty fruit is incredibly rich in polyphenols that help soothe and repair irritated or inflamed skin.
